I am saddened to hear the news today of the passing of Actor Kenny Baker, who played the famous droid R2-D2 in the first six Star Wars movies. He was 81. As one of the generation who went to the pictures to see the original films, I well remember how R2-D2 and his friend C-3PO became the greatest robotic icons since Robby the Robot in the 1956 SciFi classic, 'Forbidden Planet'. Kenny Baker had dwarfism and stood just 1.12 metres tall, and whilst he had a long and distinguished career, he will undoubtedly be remembered best for his role in Star Wars, where he made a truly gigantic contribution to the Science Fiction genre.
