New Year's Day saw my Wife and eldest Grandson doing something which I have never tired of in almost fifty-nine years, and which laid the seed of my eventually coming to into acting... We went to the pictures!
The feature in question was 'Rogue One', the latest instalment in the Star Wars saga, and as one who was there when Obi-Wan Kenobi first faced Darth Vader in 1977, I can tell you it never loses its magic for me, (and I still find myself drawn to the Dark Side!). The film-maker's art has travelled a long way since the original releases, although not always postively; and to be honest, I do find many of the modern green screen and CGI created shots as obvious as the 1940's backdrops. I was however, impressed by the digital recreations in Rogue One of characters from the past films who were played by Actors and Actresses who are sadly no longer with us. Guy Henry, whom I know best for his role as Henrik Hanssen in the BBC medical drama: 'Holby City', was transformed into Peter Cushing's Governor Tarkin from the original film, and Norwegian Actress Ingvild Deila gets the Princess Leia treatment right at the end. Neither of the efforts is quite perfected, Leia in particular, rather gave me the impression of being a waxworks model. However, the question of digitally recreating characters played by now dead performers has it seems, caused something of a stir in Tinseltown, with Actors and Actresses seeking to legally protect their images being used posthumously.
The Lawyers will no doubt see some rich pickings in the possible legal ramifications, but I have questions about this: The Actor or Actress portrays a character, and it is that character whom the studio are recreating. There is also the question of what is meant when the performer signs the contract allowing their image to be used worldwide in any format etc?
In this fiercely competitive industry, most performers struggle to be seen when they are alive, and I for one would like to think I could give a performance thought worthy of being recreated after I'm gone!
